This is a cool new improvement and you’ll need to be on at least version 11.20.2 for Mac, PC, Android or iPhone. Same versions for all.

You can now link to Evernote notebooks, stacks and spaces inside a note, which makes building dashboards, project hubs and simple table-of-contents notes much easier.

• What’s new, and how to add links to a notebook, a space and a stack

• A couple of ideas for using this for projects, clients and general navigation

I had a message from Dave, one of Taming the Trunk’s paid subscribers the other day with a cool problem.

He wanted, like many others, the floating table of contents feature on mobile so it makes it a lot easier to scroll through long notes. I’d love this as well.

Right now, the only option is to use a fixed table of contents, but that means on the desktop or web, a fixed TOC is showing when the floating TOC works just fine. It’s duplication and taking up room.

Here’s the TOC on my reading list.

On desktop and the web, I get the cool floating table of contents that looks like this.

On my phone, I need to keep the text TOC so I can get to the different authors quickly, but it’s a pain looking at this on my Mac.

The perfect solution would be for floating TOC to work on phones, but until that happens, you can hide/show the text TOC using a toggle.

When the toggle is open it looks like this.

When the toggle is closed, it looks like this.

The reason for using a toggle instead of a header is to stop the table of contents heading appearing in the main TOC and messing it up.

Not perfect, but an interesting use for the new toggle feature.

Two really useful Evernote AI prompts

The first is my ‘What’s happening today” prompt.

I run this at the start of each day.

This has been working well and it gives me a summary of my day so I know what’s going on.

The response I got for today looks like this.

I’ve found this very useful, especially right at the start of the day.

A quick note on the tag Flow. These are notes that have been emailed in from my invoice software, things like recurring invoices that need checking before sending and any payments made.

The second little prompt I’ve been using has saved me time, but there is a small bug with it. I’ve mentioned the bug to the Evernote team and hopefully it will get fixed.

When I first boot up Evernote each morning I usually have a bunch of overdue tasks. Things I didn’t get round to the day before. I’ve then, very tediously, changed the due date on all these overdue tasks to Today. Boring!

Here’s the prompt.

This is the response I got.

I’m pretty sure you could also do this at the end of each day and tell the AI to change the due date of all tasks with the due date of Today to Tomorrow.

Important! I would make sure you’ve not got any recurring tasks overdue as the dates could get messed up. Maybe try asking the AI to ignore recurring tasks. All mine get completed each day as they are the most important tasks for me.

Now the little bug I mentioned. When the due date is updated, it shows in the task kingdom as X hours ago and still appears in the overdue section.

The date is correct, but it shows in the UI wrong. The solution is to open the task and then click save. A bit of a pain but still quicker than changing all the task dates manually.

I’ve mentioned this bug and hopefully it will get fixed.

One other thing to mention. These types of prompts are going to become MUCH easier to run very soon when they launch a new feature I’m testing. Can’t say anything else right now🤐

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while as there are now over 300 articles and none of them are in actual categories. It was a bit tedious, but I’ve finished the last 12 months. I’ll work on others over the weekend.

The AI Memory is a way to add global instructions that the Evernote AI Assistant and the AI Title Generator look at every time you prompt them.

You give the AI specific instructions that you want it to follow.

In the video you’ll see where to find AI Memory in Evernote, what kinds of “global instructions” it can store.

I run a few simple instructions and also tell it how to structure invoice and bill titles when I use the Ai title generator.

Thanks for all the nice feedback and messages about the interview with Stacey Harmon last week, loads of folk found the conversation useful and I’m going to try and get Stacey back on in a few months.

This week is a bit of a mismatch of new small features I’ve forgotten to mention and some more use cases for Evernote’s AI Assistant.

We start with...

A New What’s New Page

You may have noticed that down the bottom of the sidebar, we now have a little megaphone icon that looks a bit like this.

This icon appears blue when there’s something new to read.

Click it and you go to a brand new “What’s New” page, which is much more informative than the basic release notes.

It’s a nicer way to tell you about new features and improvements and there’s also a learn section, which I believe will be expanded on.

You can also file a bug or suggest a new feature pretty easily.

I’d like to see the whole ‘Help and Learning’ section from the website built into this as it would end up being a one-stop shop for help and advice.

Search box gets a kingdom bar

This dropped a few weeks ago. If you open the search box you’ll now see a thin bar at the top which gives you easy access to all the Evernote kingdoms like Tasks, Calendar, Home etc.

I’ve not found myself using it that much, but I can see how it could be useful.

Maybe the ability to customise it? Add notebooks and spaces to it? Would you find this useful? Let me know in the comments.

The AI Assistant can delete notes

Not automatically!

So, you can ask the AI assistant to delete a note or multiple notes and you also get the chance to undo, which is kind of important.

Here’s the conversation for deleting an open note.

There’s an option to undo as well.

Now you may be thinking, it’s much easier to just delete it than go through all this conversation and you’d be correct. I don’t see this context being useful.

But, if you ask the AI to find lots of notes within a certain criteria and then delete them it could be useful.

You could ask the AI Assistant to find all your notes in a notebook that have the title “Untitled”, which means they could be empty.

Then ask it to delete them all.

I created a bunch of notes and didn’t title them. Here’s the conversation.

Now this is much more useful. You can use the AI Assistant to find a bunch of notes you don’t want and then get rid of them.

Mermaid charts for a family tree

I had an email from Dany who’s one of the TTT paid subscribers and has been using Mermaid charts quite a bit. He created a lineage chart and this inspired me to create a family tree chart using the AI Assistant.

So, I asked the Evernote AI to create a fake family tree for me starting in 1760 and includes births, marriages, children and deaths. It did a really good job and provided me with perfect Mermaid code to build the chart.

It came up with this.

Now the chart is great, the problem is the resolution. You can’t read the names in the boxes.

Any charts that are big, horizontally, will look like this.

What you see above is the maximum size.

There was an Evernote Expert call yesterday and I mentioned this to them so I really hope improving resolution is on the to do list.

I reckon Mermaid in Evernote could be very useful for genealogists. Let me know what you think.

I’ll leave the code for this Mermaid chart at the bottom of the post in case you want to play with it.

Slash commands now work in lists

This little improvement dropped this week, so make sure you’re all up to date.

You can now use the slash (/) command in a list.

It works in check, bullet, or numbered lists.

I know a few folk have been asking for this.

And finally...

I’ve given the AI Assistant a name!

Awaken EVE!

I always thought this would be a great name for the assistant and now we have the AI Memory feature we can name the Evernote Assistant, we can also tell it our own name as well.

This is what my AI memory looks like.

A quick mid-week video on a couple of small improvements that have dropped in the last 24 hours.

Grab yourself version 11.17.3 from the download page or wait for the in-app updates which can take 3 - 5 days.

We have three new improvements that may help workflows a little and help us organise things more efficiently.

• Toggle blocks have arrived. These are like plain text collapsible sections similar to how headers collapse but they don’t appear in the table of contents. Just an easy way to hide content in long notes.

• Call-out colours. There’s a new three-dot menu to the top right of a call-out block and you can select a colour for the call-out. Very useful and heavily requested.

• We have a heading 4. Just a smaller header. Works the same as all the other headers and you can set the default font, size and colour for it in settings.

The Evernote AI Assistant is getting a memory and it’s going to make the AI much more powerful.

You need to be on the latest version and if you don’t see it right away then try a log out and back in again to kick things off.

The Evernote AI Assistant already remembers whats going on inside a conversation so you can refer back to information at the start of a conversation do the usual back and forth to get what you want.

This memory is a bit different. It’s more like global instructions that the AI Assistant will look at every time you prompt it.

Something like “Always use British English“.

Right now, if I want responses in British English, I need to tell the assistant every time I prompt it. If you use the AI memory, it happens automatically, all the time.

No more simplified English with zeds all over the place!

If you find yourself getting irritated by some of the replies you get from the assistant, then use the memory to correct it. I’m not a fan of Oxford commas, and I never got taught them at school, and I’ve never used them as they look weird, so you can instruct the AI assistant to ditch the Oxford comma.

How to access your AI Memory

Head over to Settings -> AI features -> AI memory and you should see something like this.

You can see a list of all the memories you’ve taught the AI and can remove them if you want. There’s a little X to the right of each memory.

You also get a little label under the memory that tells what type of memory it is. The AI sets this. I’ve seen labels for Style, Title Preferences and Preferences so far. There’s probably more.

If you want to add a memory, then click the button that says Ask AI to remember something.

The AI Assistant will open and you can tell it what you want. Say something like “Always use British English and never use em dashes”.

Hit enter and this will be saved in your AI memory section.

You can also add a memory directly from the AI Assistant. Just ask it like this.

So, the AI Assistant now has a memory, which makes it much more powerful.

Which brings me to the question...

What do you use the AI Assistant memory for?

It’s all well and good saying here’s a cool new feature, but how does this impact you and your workflow? How does it make your Evernote better?

The first thing to jump on is training the AI to style responses how you want them.

Here’s how I trained it.

This is what the memory looks like when saved.

You can also influence the AI Title generator by adding some instructions.

This is what is says in the memory after these instructions are given.

You could also tell it what format you want the date in, mm/dd/yy or dd/mm/yyyy or something else.

Now when I click the AI Title generator, it should put the month and year of the invoice in the title. Only if it appears in the invoice.

This was an AI generated title for a bill that I emailed in.

You should also be able to influence tagging and the moving of notes using memories. I’ve not tried it to a huge extent yet, but I’ve had some success.

As with all these AI tools, there is an element of trial and error and pestering the AI to do exactly what you want, but with a bit of persistence, you should be able to customise how things work a little better.

Another quick note. None of the memories you add or conversations you have are used to train the AI.

Reorder pinned tabs

This kind of completes my want list for tabs.

We can now drag and reorder our pinned tabs.

I like to keep my tasks to the far left of the tab bar, but after a busy day of having way too many tabs open, it sometimes migrates elsewhere.

Now I can just drag it back in place.

Tabs have changed the way I use Evernote. My workflow is much smoother now.

The video shows how to create the call-outs, gives lots of examples of different kinds of call-outs and there’s a couple of real life examples on how to use them.

If last week’s new stuff wasn’t enough, here’s another fairly big new feature that quite a few folk have been asking for.

Mermaid has arrived in Evernote.

Not the sea sirens but the chart syntax that makes it sort of easy to create different kinds of charts.

You write text and you get a chart.

If you want to learn the Mermaid code, then head over here.

If that looks little like hard work, don’t worry, the Evernote AI Assistant knows how to write the code and we’ll look at this later.

Simply put, we can now create charts in our Evernote notes. Lots of different charts like this:

• Flowcharts

• Sequence diagrams

• Class diagrams

• Gantt charts

• Pie charts

• Mind-maps

• XY charts

• Venn diagrams

And quite a few more charts. Check this page under diagram syntax.

How to create a Mermaid chart in Evernote

Head over to the Insert menu at the top left of the note or use a slash (/) command for Mermaid.

A box appears in Evernote with a very simple chart already inserted.

There are some different views that you can select at the top right of the chart block.

Code lets you just see the code that creates the chart.

Split is the default and lets you see the code and the chart at the same time.

Preview lets you see just the chart, no code.

When you’re in Preview mode, you can click the little expand icon at the top right of the Mermaid block and make the chart full screen.

The little down icon at the top right will download the chart for you as a PNG image file.

The three-dot menu gives you the following options.

Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find it’s pretty powerful and you’ll be able to create all kinds of charts for your notes.

The only issue is that you need to know the code. That’s kind of the stumbling block.

Thankfully, we have our little friend at the bottom right of our notes.

Create Mermaid charts using the Evernote AI Assistant

Our little AI mate knows how to code Mermaid script, so we can just prompt it for the chart we want using natural language.

When you first add a Mermaid chart to your note, you’ll see the AI Assistant button at the top.

Click on this and the assistant will open and be ready for creating your chart.

I used this the other day.

As part of my job, I sometimes have to plan out automated email marketing drip campaigns and I’m embarrassed to say I always create the flow charts in PowerPoint and copy/paste the screen shot.

Not any more. The other day, I used the AI Assistant to make me a chart.

This is the prompt I used:

The chart it came up with was perfect. I’ve downloaded it as an image and this is what it looks like.

I inserted this image into the strategy document I was working on.

Being able to just type what I wanted in natural language and have it come up with a chart was brilliant. It was also really quick. I think I’ll be using this a lot.

OK, here’s a final example. This is an Ishikawa diagram. Never heard of this before, but it looks cool!

The one big improvement I’d like to see is the addition of colour. The pie chart example above looks a bit grey.

Mermaid charts should be available on desktop and phones. Just make sure you’re on the latest version.

There’s a lot to get through this week, so apologies for a long one.

We’ve got some big things, a few extremely useful small things and some gossip!

Let’s start with this.

Add call outs to your notes

This is very useful. I’m most likely going to use this quite a bit.

Make sure you’re on the latest version. Call-outs are available on desktop and mobile devices.

You can now add a call-out item to your note. It’s somewhere you can write something that’s important, that stands out from the content.

To insert a call-out head to the Insert menu at the top left of the note or use a slash (/) command.

You can also use an alias slash command to kick off a call-out.

So far I’ve managed to find /alert, /warning, /info, /danger and /lightbulb.

Once you have your call-out in your note, you can change the emoji icon by clicking on it. You get the full emoji picker so you can choose what you want.

Most text formatting works inside a call-out. You can use bold, italics, underline and strikethrough. You can change the font and font size and add bullet or numbered lists.

One thing you can’t seem to do is add a header to the call-out. Not sure if this is a bug or by design, an easy workaround is to increase the font size.

There’s a lot of flexibility around call-outs, add whatever emoji you want and use them to make certain information stand out.

One thing I would love to see is the ability to change the background colour of the call-out. Maybe using the selection of colours you get for table cells?

AI Generated Note Titles

I posted a video demonstrating how this works the other day, so make sure you take a look.

This works on desktop and mobile, just make sure you’re on the latest version.

When you hover over a note title, you’ll see a little icon to the left (on mobile its’s a button below the title) and when you click on it, the AI suggests a title.

You can keep clicking the icon and the system will rotate around five different titles. If you don’t like any of those, you can click out of the title, then back into it and get some more suggestions.

One thing to point out is that this feature uses Evernote’s own AI. It doesn’t send any information to a third party AI and it doesn’t use note information for training. Everything is done on the Evernote servers.

If you want to switch off this feature, head over to Settings -> Preferences -> AI Features and toggle it off.

I’ve found this useful for some notes. I still use my own naming convention on a lot of notes, but I have found this useful. I usually edit what the AI comes up with, but it does give me some ideas.

I’d love to see some sort of global instructions built in where we could say things like “Always add the month and year to the end of a title” or “Always use British English”.

Note tabs get more keyboard shortcuts

This is HUGE!

It’s a really small thing, but it makes a big difference.

You can now use CTRL+TAB to cycle through your note tabs. This is great!

You can also use CTRL+SHIFT+TAB to go the other way.

This has made a huge difference to how I use tabs. I always use these shortcuts to make my way through browser tabs so its easy to apply this to note tabs in Evernote.

Another new shortcut is using Cmd+Ctrl+1-9 or CTRL+SHIFT+1-9 to go to a specific tab.

I have my tasks pinned all day to the top left and I can now use the keyboard to get to them quickly.

Tasks kingdom now has a right click option for notes

This is useful. Especially for opening notes in a new tab.

When you’re looking at your tasks in the main task area, you can now right click on the name of a note and make actions on that note.

This includes opening the note in a new tab which is what I mainly use it for. You can also export, share, see the note info and perform other actions on the note from the task window.

Evernote could be getting an MCP

Some gossip!

So, I found this reply to a Tweet/X the other day.

I also know from a couple of the Evernote Expert meetings that this could be coming at some point and now they’ve made it public I can post something about it.

If you’re wondering what the heck an MCP is, its a way for AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude etc to connect to Evernote and see your notes.

You could in inside ChatGPT and have the ability to call information from your Evernote notes directly into your AI chat. There could also be the possibility of being able to add/edit notes from the AI tools as well.

I have no idea what the final functionality could be, it may only be read only, it may let us update and change notes. We’ll have to wait and see.

No idea when it’s coming out either.

Evernote AI Assistant could be coming to mobile

Something else leaked on Xitter... the AI Assistant is coming to mobile.

Again, I know from some of the Evernote Expert meetings that this is being worked on but no idea when it will be launched.

I also have no idea how this will work on a small screen. Its going to take some clever user interface skills to bake it in.

It will make mobile much more useful.

I’ve had a few folk asking where the mid-week AMAs have gone and they’ve not gone for good, I still plan to publish more of them but I want to mix the mid-week post up a little and create different types of content.

Substack have just released a video studio feature and I’ve been having a play, it makes creating short videos like this quite easy so the plan is to publish some short videos demonstrating new features or adding some context to existing ones.

So, this week’s video is about generating note titles using Evernote’s AI.

Its a new feature that’s just come out and you need version 11.14.1 for Mac and PC or 11.14.3 on iPhone and Android.

This is using Evernote’s own AI system so it doesn’t send any note information out of Evernote and none of your note contents is used to train the AI.

You should see a new AI button to the left of your note title, click it for a title suggestion and keep clicking it for more.

Quite a few small things to mention this week, but one of them has made a big difference to my workflow.

I used to managed my tasks in a separate window in the web version of Evernote. I have dual monitors when I’m working in my office and on the left screen was the Evernote app and the right screen had the web version of Evernote open with my tasks on view. I kept this open all the time.

In the screen shot above, tasks are open in the web on the left and a daily note is on the right. I don’t use this workflow anymore.

When the note tabs feature arrived a few weeks ago, I started keeping the task window open all the time in a tab to the far left of the note bar and this changed my workflow completely.

For a start I don’t have to open Evernote in the web every morning. Secondly I can get to my tasks and daily note very quickly no matter what I’m working on in Evernote.

I don’t use a daily note every day, but when I do, I have this open in a tab to the right of my tasks.

My tab bar in Evernote now looks like this. Tasks on the left, a daily note and then the notes I’m working on.

Which brings me onto another new thing...

Pinned tabs arrive in Evernote

This has made my new workflow perfect. Being able to pin my Evernote tasks to the top left as a pinned tab gets them out of the way but easy to access.

To pin a tab, just right click it.

Just like in your browser, it moves over to the far left of the tab bar.

Right click the pinned tab to unpin it.

This workflow change is for the better.

I’ve been testing pinned tabs for a few weeks now and it’s made its way into my muscle memory very quickly, probably because it behaves like a browser tab.

If I’m working on a project, I’ll pin a couple of notes that I need to use over and over again, my daily note is pinned if I’m using it and my main training jobs note is usually pinned next to my tasks as I look at this note multiple times a day.

Everything seems to be working a lot smoother.

Wrap text around images

Another little something that folks have been shouting ages for.

We can now wrap text around our images so it appears to the left or the right.

A little bit like this.

The way to get this working is to insert an image, resize it so it’s smaller by clicking on the image and dragging one of the corners to alter the size.

You then hover over the image, click the alignment icon and you can select wrapping text to the left or the right of the image.

It works well and gives us another formatting option.

You can now type

Hit space and it turns to bold.

There’s quite a selection of Markdown shortcuts available in the editor. Here’s the full list.

We have some new things to play with on Evernote mobile and it’s going to please a lot of folk.

Evernote mobile gets slash commands

Slash (/) commands have been around for quite a while on the desktop apps and I use them every day. They are really useful for adding various items to a note quickly without leaving your keyboard.

We now have them on mobile!

Make sure you’re on the latest version (11.12.1), app store updates can take 5 - 7 days to get through to everyone. Keep mashing the update button.

Open a note, bring up the keyboard and enter a / and you should see this.

You can use your finger to scroll up and down the slash command list and just tap the item you want.

The full list of commands available is huge and includes all formatting options like headers, font colours and all the items you can add like audio recording, images, tables, etc.

Because the list is long, you can start typing what you want and the list shrinks like this.

Mobile slash commands also support aliases, which are other words you can use to find a command.

For example you can type /todo to find New task or Checklist. You can use /meet to find the Event or Record command.

Easier note links on mobile with @ commands

Adding internal note links on mobile has always been a bit of a fuss, so this new addition will make a huge difference.

We can now use @ commands on mobile.

We’ve been able to use these on desktop for ages and it’s the main way I add internal links.

Open up a note on your phone and type the @ command and then start typing the name of a note and you see it appear. You can scroll up and down the list to find what you want.

This instantly makes internal linking an awful lot easier and quicker.

You can also set a default view for internal links on mobile to display them as Mention, Text, Title or Preview.

Head to Settings → Notes → Links and attachments → Evernote links.

My default for internal links is Preview which looks like this.

New text formatting bar in Evernote mobile

Another new thing on mobile is a brand new formatting bar, which to be honest makes a lot more sense.

When you edit a note, you can now see a sliding format bar that goes right and then left again so you can scroll to see all the different options. When you tap an option, the changes you can make appear just above it.

This is what it looks like when you want to change the font.

I’ve found this new toolbar a lot easier to work with than the old one, much quicker and more intuitive.

And finally...

This is best viewed on desktop and I’m not sure how old it is, it may have been released ages ago, but I only found it last week!

You can see all of your Evernote usage in one place including your how many MBs you use.

In the desktop app go to Settings → Personal info → Go to your profile.

It’ll open up a page in your web browser and you may need to login.

You’ll end up on an Account Summary page and scroll down to the bottom where you can see all your usage.

The Notes number includes anything in the trash. The storage number is in MBs and you can convert to GBs by dividing by 1024 so my storage is 16.07GB.

Over the last few days I’ve been playing around with the Evernote AI Assistant (AIA) trying to understand a few new use cases and I found out it can see inside a CSV file.

I presume this is because a CSV file is basically a text file that holds spreadsheet data.

Right now the AIA can’t see inside Excel spreadsheets, but you can always export an Excel as a CSV.

So, what I did was get ChatGPT to create a sample CSV file for me, some survey data for an online store. I tried to think up a real life use case where it would be hard work to look through 100’s or 1000’s of lines of data.

The data looks a little like this.

I then used the following prompt:

It looked at the data and gave me a fairly comprehensive sentiment analysis.

From the data in the survey it told me what customers cared most about.

It then went on to give me a list of pain points and positives.

I could also ask it for actual numbers.

This was the response.

Being able to analyse large amounts of data inside a CSV file is incredibly useful.

In pre AI days we’d of been trawling through this data and writing spreadsheet functions. We can now ask questions in natural language and get an answer.

Add note reminders using the AI Assistant

Something new. Make sure you’re on the latest version.

You can now add/edit/remove note reminders using the AIA.

First thing I’ll ask. Do you use note reminders? I’ve pretty much stopped using them since tasks came out. I’d love to hear from folk who still use them and what they use them for. Leave me a comment.

If you do use reminders try an AI prompt like something like this.

This was the response I got.

And the reminder was set in the note.

This worked for changing the reminder.

You can also add reminders to notes that are not open by mentioning them using the ‘@’ symbol.

This note wasn’t open and was in a different notebook but it added the reminder just fine.

A simple prompt removed the reminder.

I think the key to all of the AI prompting is to make sure you tell the AIA what note to work with, don’t assume it knows. I’ve managed to get much better results this way.

Duplicate a close note tabs using right click

Another quick new thing. If you right click a tab you can now duplicate it and also close it.

I would still love to see a mouse wheel click for closing the tab very much the same as I have in my browser. I hope this comes.

A couple of new things to report on today and the first one is a little feature that folks have wanted for years.

Grab yourself the latest version of the Mac and PC app, open up a note with some headings in it and you may see some little lines on the right side of the screen.

Yes, we now have a scrollable and clickable, floating table of contents.

Hover your mouse over the lines and a pop up appears with a list of all your note headings.

This is what it looks like for my reading list.

As you scroll down the page and reach each heading it changes colour in the pop up.

When you click on any of the heading links in the pop up you’ll jump straight to the heading in the note.

This is going to make navigating long notes so much easier.

No matter where you are in a note you can instantly move somewhere else.

I’ve found this little addition very useful and I’ve already started adding more headings to some of my long notes just to improve navigation. It’s almost built into my muscle memory now.

If you would prefer the table of contents on the left of the page or disable it then we have a new setting.

Head to Settings -> Preferences -> Notes -> Floating table of contents.

Choose the option you want and away you go.

If you’re on the latest version of Evernote and can’t see this then try a log out and back in again or hang on another few days and you should get it.

Add tasks using the AI Assistant

There’s also been an improvement to the AI Assistant. We can now create tasks.

Here’s the conversation I just had when testing.

I first asked the AIA to “Create a task in the open note for “Write the report” with due date of 1st May“.

I then ask it to “Set the time at 11am and flag it.“.

Everything worked fine.

I’ve heard a few folk wanting this. I don’t think I’ll be using it myself a lot as I find it just as quick to create the task manually and with the introduction of tabbed notes last week I can have multiple task notes open.

Pretty sure a lot of folk will be happy. What do you think? Will you use the AIA to create tasks?

Going right back to the beginnings of Evernote, the goal has always been to remember everything. The biggest issue with this has been the human element. Unless we physically capture something into Evernote its not going to be remembered.

Not any more.

The research team at Evernote are working on an embedded neural chip called EVE (Event Vector Encoder) that will automatically record all events that happen during your day and record them in Evernote.

As you go through the motions of your day all the events that happen will automatically be transmitted to your phone and stored in Evernote.

The second stage is where it gets clever.

A custom built AI algorithm called EVE-MIND (Event Vector Multimodal Interpretation & Narrative Decoder) turn the vectors into your life story.

I spoke to Dr. Penelope Trunkman, Chief Research Officer at Evernote who told me “For the first time, human experience is natively machine-readable. With EVE capturing life as structured event vectors and our AI interpretation stack turning that signal into coherent narrative memory, we’ve essentially replaced ‘I think I remember’ with ‘I can retrieve.’ It’s not just note-taking, it’s a firmware upgrade for the concept of never forgetting.“

Imagine all of your day to day interactions being recorded automatically, all meetings, even the quick chat at the coffee shop. Everything will be in Evernote for you to retrieve later.

For those worried about privacy, a simple voice command of “EVE pause” will stop the recording. Just saying “EVE continue” will kick off the vector recording again.

Dr Penelope told me “Right now, we’re at the stage of embedding the chips in mice and it’s only caused a few strokes. We hope to start human trials later this year”

This technology sounds amazing and I’m thinking of putting my name down for the trials. If Evernote can make the process a simple injection of the EVE chip into the brain and then the phone app does all the recording, we could be on to a winner.

I did ask Dr Penelope what EVE-MIND made of the memories of the mice that survived and she told me their thoughts were mainly about cheese and how to avoid Tom.

Sing from the rooftops. Evernote has brought back tabbed notes. We’ve not seen this since 2020.

The story goes that in the old version of Evernote, before 2020, folks who used Macs had tabbed notes. You could open multiple notes as tabs, just like web pages in your browser.

The issue was that folks who used Windows never knew they existed as it was a Mac only feature. I was one of those people. Someone mentioned tabs to me once and I kind of said, “what now”.

Zoom forward almost 6 years and Evernote have bought back this much loved feature and its available on Mac and Windows. We all get the feel the love of tabs.

Open Evernote notes in a tab

So what you can now do is open multiple notes in tabs across the top of Evernote.

Just right click any note from the note list, sidebar or three dot menu and select Open in New Tab.

You’ll then have a new tab open with that note.

There’s also a plus button to the right of all your tabs.

When you click this, a new tab is opened to your default in Settings -> Preferences -> Application -> When opening a new tab.

You can set this to start on the home page, all notes or all notebooks.

When you click on a new tab, the note is opened on its own or with its note list.

If the note opens on its own in a window and you want to see the note list for the notebook it’s in then just click the notebook name in the breadcrumbs at the top of the note.

I know a lot of folk who have multiple notes open in separate windows, so this will be a great improvement and a slightly easier workflow.

If you end up opening lots of tabs, because I know you will, the size of the tab will shrink so you won’t be able to see the name of the note. Just hover over the tab and a tooltip gives you the name.

Reorder your tabs by dragging

You’ll probably find that as the day goes by and you open more and more tabs, they won’t be in the order you want them, so grab hold of them with your mouse and drag to reorder.

I’ve found this really useful. Just kind of changing priority of the notes by reordering.

When I’m working on a specific project, I now open all the notes I may need and reorder them by priority or usefulness.

Open other Evernote sections in a tab

We’re not just restricted to notes.

We can open the following views in a tab:

• Tasks

• Home Page

• All notes

• Calendar

• Templates Notebook

• Notebooks

The only one missing from the list is Spaces. I’d love the chance to open a space in a tab.

Being able to open Tasks in a new tab has been very helpful. During the day, I have Tasks on the far left of my tab bar so I can switch to it really quickly. I then open and close other tabs when I need to.

I’ve also found having Calendar open in a new tab useful for when I’m adding lots of meetings in one go, I can switch between notes and calendar really quickly now.

There’s a tab indicator when recording

Another little feature that’s very useful is being able to spot if you’ve got a recording going on and which tab/note it’s in.

When you’re recording yourself or a meeting, there’s a little pulsing record dot to the left of the tab that’s recording.

This is helpful.

For one, it reminds you there’s a recording going on so you don’t forget and if you have multiple tabs open at any one time, you can see which one has the recording.

My new little system for meetings is to now open up all the notes I might need to refer to during the meeting in tabs and then kick off the recording in the main meeting note.

I can browse around the different tabs, take manual notes and whatnot, and the main meeting note just carries on recording.

I also have this wild idea of being able to drag some content from a note up to a tab, have that tab open in a different note and be able to drop the content where I want. Kind of drag and drop between notes.
