AMA 53: Why does Evernote web keep logging me out?
Quick note. There’s been a huge influx of new subscribers over the last week, so hello and welcome to the heard. This is the weekly Ask Me Anything post where I answer questions from the Taming the Trunk community.
A huge thank you to all paid subscribers and many thanks also to those who bought me a coffee. Taming the Trunk is 100% reader supported, no ads or commission links and your support is really appreciated.
This week on Ask Me Anything about Evernote we have a question from Sean.
If you have a question you’d love an answer to then leave it in the comments below and I’ll add it to the list.
Sean asks
Why does Evernote web keep logging me out? I have to login every day and they have removed the keep me logged in tick box. Is this why?
OK. So its not normal to have to login to Evernote web every day. Once logged in you should stay logged in for around 30 days.
The reason the remember me checkbox has been removed is that the default is now to keep you active for around a month.
I don’t hear this issue come up too often and there’s a few things you can check before sending in a support ticket so lets run through them.
Do you have any ad blockers or tracker blockers running?
These can mess with the login process quite a bit so it could be an idea to disable them for Evernote and try again. My own ad blocker causes issues with a lot of web logins. Network level based blockers like Pi-hole can also cause login issues.
Clean your browser cookies and cache
There may be a corrupted temporary file or cookie lurking around, so make sure you clear out your temporary files or cache and delete any cookies then try logging in again.
Is your browser set to delete cookies when closed?
Some browsers have a setting that will delete all cookies when you close the browser. This pretty much means you’ll have to login to a lot of apps every time you open your browser.
Are you using a VPN?
If you have a virtual private network (VPN) installed, it could be flipping your IP address so you appear in different countries in a kind of unnatural way, like doing London to Sydney in 4 hours! This can force you to be logged out as it could also be a sign that someone is trying to hack into your account. See if the login works without the VPN.
Is your browser up to date?
Do a quick check. I spoke to someone ages ago who had blocked their browser from being updated and it was over a year out of date.
Are browser extensions messing with the login?
Try logging in using a private browsing window or another browser or disable all your extensions. It could be one of them causing the problem.
If you’re still having an issue after trying all that then send in a support ticket, reply to the initial suggestions and let them know what you’ve tried. Support will be able to help more.
I hope that helps Sean.
Have a good rest of the week
All the best
Jon
