Newsletter housekeeping: The latest version for PC & Mac is 10.102.3. You can grab it from the download page. Latest mobile version is 10.101.2.
Can I quickly thank all the supporters of Taming the Trunk from over the last week. Thanks to Jan, Benedict, Jonaz, Neil, John and Jordan. Your contributions are very much appreciated. If you have it in your pocket to support my efforts you can tip me a coffee here.
We've been waiting for this! Two-way calendar sync for Google and Outlook calendars is here.
You'll need at least version 10.100.1 on PC & Mac or version 10.100.0 on mobile to see the new functionality.
For a while now we've been able to connect our Google and Outlook calendars to Evernote, see all our events and link notes to those events. I use this a LOT! All the training sessions I run have a specific note that's connected to an event on my calendar. It just works.
One thing we've been missing is the ability to create and edit existing events in Google and Outlook calendars.
Now we can.
Creating a new event
In desktop Evernote hit the "Event" button in the sidebar or click "New Event" when you're viewing the calendar
In mobile tap "Event" from the Create Screen or the floating calendar icon when you're in the Calendar view.
Depending on your device you'll get something that looks like this.
Enter the name of your event, chose the dates and then click or tap the dropdown for which calendar you want to add the event to.
Hit create event and you're done. The change should show up on your Google or Outlook calendar pretty much instantly.
Editing and deleting calendar event
This is pretty straightforward. When you're looking at your calendar, click or tap the event you want to edit and depending on device you'll get a box similar to this.
Click on "Edit" or "Delete" to perform the actions and away you go.
One other quick tip for calendars. You can link more than one note to an event so if you're heading into a meeting, you can link all the notes related to a project or activity and get to them really quickly.
I've been using the two-way sync for a couple of weeks now and I'm starting to get into the habit of creating events in Evernote instead of Google. My muscle memory still goes for Google but not quite so much.
One thing I would love to see developed in the future is mouse-dragging functionality for selecting a span of time on the calendar, just like we have in Google and Outlook. I think this would improve adding events slightly.
I’d also love to see the option to add and insert an event when using the slash ('/) menu. Right now, we can only insert a previously created event.
I don't think the plan from Evernote is to replace all the functionality of Google and Outlook calendars. I think the main goal here is to make it easy to add, edit and delete events so we can make small changes quickly and integrate our events into our notes.
Let me know if you've started using this feature yet. What improvements would you like to see.
…and finally
I’ve just received the RENT update which has been rolling out slowly over the last month or two. This showed up when I launched the PC app.
RENT is a new sync system and local database for meta-data. This explains a bit more.
To be honest I’ve not really noticed anything different. The app seems snappy but it’s always been snappy for me. I shall report back.
Have you had the big RENT update yet?
Have a great weekend
All the best
Jon
I'm jealous your meta data has always synced quickly! Sometimes it does for me, but other times it takes hours and occasionally days to see it sync. This can be quite frustrating when I'm updating a lot of very active notes and tasks. I haven't gotten RENT yet but boy do I have my hopes pinned on it.
Q - does RENT also apply to tasks rather than just the meta data of notes?
