If you have ever ignored Evernote tags because they live out of sight at the bottom of a note, inline tags fix that by letting you type a tag anywhere.
If you are in a meeting that covers multiple projects you can tag notes to the projects they will impact. So, you can go back through your notes after the meeting and update each project as necessary instead of trying to do it whilst the meeting is ambling forward. I have been waiting for this for a long time.
As a longtime fan of tags in Evernote, this is a brilliant upgrade. I'm not so fussed about having the tags in the body of the note rather that just at the bottom (although I can see it might be useful sometimes), but the # shortcut seems an easier way to add tags than entering at the bottom of the note, which now seems quite clumsy in comparison.
Given I'n not interested in AI features in Evernote, I'm glad the other functionality is still getting some love from the Evernote team.
I have always been a big tag user, so this is an interesting concept. It looks like we do lose the ability to use the hashtag for anything other than inserting a tag (unless we turn off the feature entirely in Settings). For example, if I type, "Taming The Trunk is the #1 newsletter on Substack," Evernote creates a new tag and tags the entire note "1."
I even tried typing the text first and then backspacing and putting the tag in front of the text. No luck.
With some experimentation, I did find this workaround: If I have typed a hashtag somewhere else and I copy/paste it into Evernote, the hashtag acts as a single character. For example, if I have some hashtags for use in social media that I want to type into Evernote, I can accomplish that by typing a hashtag somewhere else, copying it to the clipboard, and then each time I want the hashtag to appear, paste it rather than type it.
I watched a recent Dave Edwards video on EN tags and he said most were a bit of a mess. Mine were so it inspired me to restructure my tag approach. Now, instead of single tags, which can quickly get too numerous and out of control, I use "structured tags" for want of a better term. So for example, I have some Personal tags such as Personal - Car, Personal - Qualifications, Personal - Purchases etc. So far it has been working quite well and I find it easier to assign tags and have a structured approach. Of course you can do something similar with notebooks etc but with tags you can apply multiple ones to single note so more powerful. For searching, press Alt 7 to bring up tag search.
Nice. Good idea to stick to a structured list of tags. They can easily get out of control. I think someone here has over 6000 which would blow my mind lol.
As always - thank you for showing us everything Evernote is adding. I too was minimizing tags, but just the convenience of using them in my CRM fields has me thinking of ways to streamline my workflow
I would think finding your inline tags would be important in long notes. Can you for example easily jump from one #edit to the next as you are cleaning up your note, or do you have to find them visually?
I am an (over-) user of tags, and the total number would shock you I am sure. I am still trying to figure out exactly what the inline version does for you that "tag added at the bottom" does not. It is a bit quicker to add, but aside from that, what is different? Retrieving the note tag is the same. However, as far as I can tell, there is no way to search for the location of the tagged line within a note. THAT would be a game-changer because there would be a way to find the line the tag was added to. So, i'm using this because of the ergonomic efficiency. If I'm missing something, I'd love to hear if there are other use cases!
Concrete example; I have a lot of suppliers. I use tags to show to whom I put out something to bid. So along the bottom I added tags; Company A, Company B, Company C.
Now if Company B wins the bid I can put a Company B tag in a table about the project. The note becomes a record of two things - a history (at the bottom) and a reminder (who won the bid).

I was wondering if they would improve tags at all but pleasantly surprised. There's more non-AI improvements coming.

Update: Here's the fix. If I want to use a hashtag and NOT have it create a tag, I can hit <Escape.>
So in my example, I would type this: Taming The Trunk is the #1<esc> newsletter on Substack."

I've heard a few folk wanting search to move to the tag on the page. Would be useful for the taggers.
