Newsletter housekeeping: It's been a mad week of updates! Windows and Mac's are currently on version 10.101.7 and you can grab it from the download page. Phones should be on version 10.101.2. TTT is free to read but if you have it in your pocket to support these efforts you can tip me a coffee here.
While I was writing last week's six-month Evernote recap, new features were still coming out. It’s almost like they wait for me to hit publish and then release something.
I've counted five new features or improvements so here we go.
Mobile font size setting
A lot of folk, including me have grumbled about the font size on phones and how it would be nice to increase the size or have it match whatever setting is in the operating system.
We can now.
In the mobile settings under "Notes" there's a new option for "Note Content Size".
You now get the choice to match the note font with your phones settings or select Normal, Large or Extra Large.
I'm on large and it's made a difference. I don’t have to dig out my glasses quite so often.
Table of contents improvement
Evernote's Table of Contents (TOC) feature can be found behind the insert button at the top left of the note or via a '/' command and it adds links to the headings in your note.
Before, if you changed the wording of a heading, you'd have to delete the TOC and add it again. Not anymore. When you now change any of the headings, they automatically change in the TOC which saves a little time.
More ways to pin a note to a notebook
Pinning a note or notes to the top of a notebook is so useful. I have notes pinned to almost every notebook now and there's a couple of new ways to add them.
On desktop the usual way of right-clicking a note in the notes list to pin it works well but you can now pin a note using the three dots menu at the top right of the note.
On phones you can tap the three-dot menu when you're viewing the note. If you're in the note list, swipe left and use the three-dot menu.
Did you know about the swipe left menu in note lists? I didn't until a couple of months ago.
BugFix tracker launched
The Evernote team have launched a BugFix tracker which going forward should help us all understand what bugs are being fixed.
As the in-app updates roll out over a few days it sometimes means that a bug fix may happen but the update hasn't come through. We can now check before sending in a support ticket.
This isn’t a list of all bugs but I think any that are quite widespread will appear in the list even before they are fixed.
Get to the BugFix tracker here which is an Evernote shared note, nice touch!
Changes to note linking
I touched on the changes to note linking last week and I've had absolutely loads of emails and messages about what it all means for internal app links and why change things.
This is what I understand.
Before the changes there used to be a "Web Link" and an "App Link" and you could grab what you wanted. The issue was that a lot of folk got confused as to which one to pick.
The phrase App is used for everything these days so which app did the link go to, the web app? Some folk thought Web Link meant a sharing or public link. There was also the fact that when you did share a note the email someone received would include two links, one for web and the other for the app.
Too hard! Especially for new users.
So, going forward we have the following:
Note Link
This is the same as the old web link and when clicked on will open Evernote in the web. You will then be given the option to open the note in the web version of Evernote or in the desktop app.
You can set the default way of opening a note link by going to Settings -> Preferences -> Application -> Open Links In.
This is the only option available within the user interface and menus of Evernote.
Internal Link
This is the same as the old app link and you can only get to it by using the Windows keyboard shortcut CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+C or the Mac shortcut Ctrl ⌥ ⌘ C.
This option doesn't appear in the user interface menus and this is deliberate so it doesn't confuse new users. Most of the folk who want internal links are pretty advanced Evernote users.
Let me know if you have questions about this.
New domain & YouTube channel for Taming the Trunk
You may have already noticed but Taming the Trunk is now using its own domain name so whenever you click a link or go to the website it turns up at tamingthetrunk.com.
The system is still using the Substack platform so there's no changes you have to make. It’s just I've had the domain for a while and finally got round to using it.
I'm going to be starting an Ask Me Anything (AMA) about Evernote very soon that will arrive on Wednesday's so if you have a question, leave it in the comments.
I've also kicked off a YouTube channel which will host any videos I publish but a few days later. I always want this as the base station so content will always appear here first.
And finally, I've been asked by a few folk, for a while now, how they can support Taming the Trunk as all the content is free to read, and I want to keep it that way. I haven't turned on the Substack payment system. What I have done is resurrect my "Tip me a coffee" page using Ko-Fi.
Its costs a few £s to run TTT plus it takes a lot of time as well so if one of the articles has helped you and you want to leave a tip you can do here, it’s much appreciated.
Going forward I will probably switch on the subscription features of Substack but the articles and videos will always be free. Paid for stuff will be some yet to be decided premium extras.
The herd has been growing like mad this year so thank you for subscribing and I'm looking forward to our second birthday next month.
Have a great weekend
All the best
Jon
Making the App Link only available by keyboard shortcut is an awful decision. I never use the weblink but use the app link a lot. I’d love to be given the choice as to which one appears in the UI. We’re not all new users!
Copying that CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+C shortcut into my shortcuts note in Evernote. Lol
