Newsletter Housekeeping: The latest episode of the Triple T productivity podcast is out and I’m talking about what ‘productivity’ actually means with Wylie McGraw. Amazing chat with a huge amount of energy & common sense!
How do you view your notes in Evernote? There are a few options.
You can have your notes display in pretty cards, as rectangular snippets, just as a list or a list on top of your note, like old skool email.
I tend to use different views for different notebooks as I want to see notes either visually or in more of a list format.
For example, I like my .Inbox notes to appear as cards.
The reason is that this notebook is just for processing information and storing all the screen grabs I do using the Evernote Helper.
I like to see things visually in this notebook. I’m not looking for note titles as they won’t always make sense, I’m looking for images and PDF thumbnails.
For my Taming The Trunk notebook I want to see my notes as a list so that I can see the recording/editing status for the podcast quickly and also see reminder dates.
For all my other notebooks I use the Snippet view. This is my default.
You can also change the displayed meta information for each view so in the list view I can change the columns and resize them. In my Taming The Trunk notebook I only show Tags and Reminder columns but you can add more.
So for the list view I can choose what columns appear and resize those columns to give me the look I want for that notebook.
For Card View in my .Inbox notebook the options are slightly different because there are no columns, just a card.
I like to show tags in this view as a lot of my workflow automations land in my .Inbox and they are usually tagged.
Have a play around with the different views and make things look the way you want.
The final piece of the puzzle is being able to save the view for each notebook. Yes, each notebook can have its own customised note view.
Big shout out to Vlad Campos for spotting this feature the other week as I hadn’t seen it.
Right at the bottom of the note view menu you can “Save current view options for this notebook”.
This means you can have a different note view for each notebook. Wonderful!
Do you use different views for different notebooks? Why?
Have a great weekend
All the best
Jon
Wow - I didn’t know each notebook can have its own customised note view! That will help a lot. Poor search results and lists are what drive me crazy about other tools. Evernote lists are so much more efficient for me. Thanks for the very useful tips.
Terrific tips, Jon! Never occurred to me to set up different views for each of my notebooks - experimenting now!
