Is Evernote's note size limit big enough?
I was pondering about this the other day when I wanted to upload a 745MB WAV file!
I host a marketing podcast and each episode is a note in Evernote. I store cover artwork, short clips and the final master in the note. The one thing I can't store is the master recordings in WAV file format as they're too big.
So this got me thinking. Should Evernote increase the note size limit?
Right now, free plan folk get a note size limit of 25MB and paid plans are 200MB.
You can find the note size by using CTRL+SHIFT+I or CMD+SHIFT+I in Windows and Macs apps and Note Info comes under the 3 dots menu on mobile apps.
Pros for increasing the limit
File sizes are getting bigger
My first computer was a ZX-81 and it had 1K of memory. That's not a typo, kilobyte not mega/gigabyte. Things have moved on, I got sent a 125MB PDF the other day!
Audio and video is high quality. Image files have larger resolutions and even with compression, files are getting big.
It's also reasonably easy to go over the note size limit if you're recording audio using Evernote. Things like lectures or long meetings can push the limit of the note.
Work & personal life is significantly paperless
Everything is digital. My gas, electricity, water bills are all emailed to me. Insurance docs are PDFS and work for at least the last 15 years has been 100% digital, hardly ever see a piece of paper.
I don't know where my printer is! In the loft I think.
What I would love to do is store all my gas bills in one note instead of each separate bill being a note on its own. But, after a while I’m going to hit the note limit.
We need to keep our information in one place instead of spreading it around the inter-webs. This means we need to store more stuff in Evernote and the note size is never going to get smaller.
Cons for increasing the limit
Evernote is not Google Drive!
If you want to store big files then a note taking app is not the place.
Evernote should stick to note taking and not become a file storage app!
Attachments are OK but for bigger stuff, use a cloud drive and then link to the file from your note.
Prices may have to go up
Right now storage in Evernote is sort of unlimited. You can store as much as you want but the limit is based on your monthly upload limit, 60MB for free plans and 10/20GB on paid plans.
If the note size limit goes up, more of the monthly limit will be used or will that need to increased as well?
Storage costs money and that cost would need to be passed on to users.
What do you think?
What size of note would you like to see?
I'm not sure I'd want things to go cloud-storage size but a 1GB note would be useful for me. I could store more client files in one note, I wouldn't be swapping between notes or apps to find things.
1GB would also prevent abuse and folks using the service as a Google drive and storing their entire movie collection!
Are things fine as they are? What note size changes would you like to see?
