Newsletter Housekeeping: Version 10.91.1 is out in the wild with a couple of new features and bug fixes. Get it from the download page or wait for in-app updates. The latest mobile version should be 10.91.0.
A short one this week as I'm catching the train to the Welsh mountains very soon for some hiking and camping.
This week brings us a couple of new features on PCs and Macs, you'll find them in the latest version 10.91.1 so download it right now and try it out.
Advanced Code Blocks
I've been waiting for this for so long! A part of my job is working with and building API integrations into marketing software so I store lots of JavaScript, PHP, HTML and CSS snippets in Evernote.
Using the old code blocks was fine, I learnt to code on green screens so I don't really need syntax highlighting and fancy indenting but if I had the choice my code snippets would look like they do in my code editor.
The new advanced code blocks bring us syntax highlighting for many languages.
When you paste some code into the code block it tries to detect which language it is. You can see Auto (JavaScript) at the top left of the screen shot above.
You can also select a language using a drop, again top left.
Right now, the languages you can chose are: Bash, C, C++, C#, CSS, Dart, Go, Haskell, HTML, XML, Java, JavaScript, JSON, Kotlin, Lua, Matlab, PHP, Plain Text, PowerShell, Python, Ruby, Rust, Scala, SQL, Swift, TypeScript, Visual Basic .NET.
If you want to copy your code snippet and use it somewhere else there's a copy button at the top left.
You can insert a code block by using the slash command, keyboard shortcut ``` or the blue insert menu at the top left of the editor.
Quote format
This week also brings us a new formatting feature in the editor, we now have a quote block.
You can insert a quote using the keyboard shortcut '>' and a space or tab. You can also find quote in the slash commands and inside the blue insert button.
A lot of folk have been asking for quote blocks for many years.
Will you use the quote format? Happy to see proper code blocks? Let me know in the comments.
I'll try and reply to comments when I get wifi/signal.
Have a great weekend
All the best
Jon
I use quote blocks frequently in email, but I don't store quotes as quoteblocks in Evernote. I do put the dash with the writer's name at the end. I have a notebook titled Words And Quotes that I keep for ones that resonate with me.
I've been storing quotes in code blocks for years to help them stand out. So happy to see this addition.
