AMA 43: Is there a way to know the size of an Evernote notebook before making it available offline on phones?
This week on Ask Me Anything about Evernote we have a question from Alejandro.
If you have a question you’d love an answer to then leave it in the comments below and I’ll add it to the list.
Alejandro asks
Is there a way to know the size of a notebook before making it available offline on phones?
Thanks for the question. This kind of follows on from lasts weeks AMA about making notebooks offline on phones.
I can totally understand the reason for needing to know this, data and storage space on our phones is limited and notebooks can be gigabytes in size so this would be useful to know so you don’t chew up all your resources.
Right now, there's not an easy way to find the size of a notebook.
Finding the size of an individual note is easy, you can go to the three-dot menu and select note info or use CTRL + SHIFT + I
on PCs or ⇧ + ⌘ + I
on Mac.
Finding the size of a whole notebook full of notes is a bit more difficult.
I think the only way to do this is to export the notebook as an ENEX file and check the file size.
ENEX files contains all the information in the note so they should be fairly accurate.
Find your notebook, right click and select Export notebook
and you should see a screen like this.
If you just want a rough idea on the size of the notebook then look to see if the Split file size
by function is available.
If it is then the notebook is over 300MB in size. If it’s greyed out then it’s less than 300MB.
To find the exact size of the notebook then select all the attributes and complete the export.
Check on your device to see what the total size of the exported file is and that's what you'll be downloading to your phone.
I hope that helps. It’s a workaround but I can't imagine this would need to be done often.
Have a great rest of the week
All the best
Jon
I’m having trouble with web clipper and the help desk has not responded. I’ve sent the activity logs, etc. as requested. I’m so frustrated that I can’t use web clipper from any device, since that’s how I mainly use Evernote. Can anyone help me? (I have uninstalled the extension, reinstalled, signed out of Google, cleared cache, all the advice. Nothing works.) Thanks, and sorry to be off-topic…
