This post on using header links inspired another use of header links: quickly moving from viewing a task in task view to viewing the task where it is located within its associated note.

First, I copy and paste the header link of the header where a task is located to the end of the task's text. Then, while viewing my tasks in the task viewer, I can quickly switch from viewing the task in the task viewer to viewing the task in the specific note and header where the task is located by tapping on the header link at the end of the task.

Pasting the header link into the task description doesn't work.

Technically, this hack does not take me directly to the task itself, but rather to the header under which the task is located within the note. Usually, after that, it is only a short scroll to find the task of interest.

In the past, to switch from the task view to the location of a task within a note, I would copy the task's text in task view, switch to the associated note, and then locate the task within the note by using "Find within note."

Have others already used this hack? Is it something that Evernote might want to implement more smoothly?

That's a good idea. Links don't work in descriptions and I wish they would... I've asked before and I hope it arrives. Would be useful for me as I have a lot of links in my descriptions.

There's a bit of a discrepancy between mobile and desktop experience getting to the assigned note. On desktop task overview there's a direct link to the Assigned note, so just one click away. On mobile using IOS, it requires 3 fiddly steps to get to the assigned note. I wish they could make this less cumbersome as I often require the details within the note. My favorite example here is a shopping list for groceries for which I don't create a task for each item, but a note with a list.

Agree. I'm hoping they spend a fair bit of time on tasks at some point.

Your hack shows there is no inherent reason header links can't appear in tables. One can thus hope Evernote will soon enable them to be created directly rather than having to make use of clever, but awkward, work-arounds. Time to employ your overpowering influence, Jon! :-)

I think its probably some sort of UI thing on where to put the link icon. I will mention it!

Like the headings/table hack - could be very useful until EN does it properly 🤣

I hadn't spotted the "Copy link to header" icon before. Are there any other little things like that?

Collapsing headers doesn't work in tables either, or tasks so hopefully they will get round to it.

Probably plenty of little things like that. I'll try and find some :)

Is there any reason why when you paste the link you get the raw link (evernote:///view/...)? In other situations (eg internal TOC or for note links) you get the text of the appropriate header or note title with the link "behind" it.

I use a nice shortcut of copying the header, selecting it and then pasting the link. It's still more work than it should be!

If I grab an internal link using CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+C and paste it into another note is appears as Title view for me as this is what I have in settings... you're seeing something diffferent?

Sorry, I've not made myself clear. I am talking about the section links obtained by hovering over a header. These always paste as the raw link. I would expect them to paste as the header text with the link embedded.

Sorry, got you. When I paste a header link into a note I get it in title view which is what's in settings? What setting do you have for Evernote Links?

This is interesting. I have the setting to be text view. If I change it to title view I get the text of the note title (including if I paste it into the same note). If I then change it back to text view the note title stays! I know the text view for a note link does not dynamically update if you change the title of the note, so maybe this is related.

So in the title view it looks like an ordinary note link but actually goes to the appropriate header when you click it. In summary I would expect the text view to behave like the title view and I would also expect the text for all views to include the title of the header.

Yup. I'll mention it.

Thanks so much for your little hack Jon. What I was looking for!

Using latest desktop version macOS, I can however only make it work in one way: when I move the header into the table toggled open with no contents under the header.

When moving the link toggled closed, it messes up my table in all sorts of weird ways and undo doesn't work either to repair the table. Also, when moving a header with toggle closed any content under the header is not moving into the table.

Yup. This seems new as it was working when I tested it. I'll mention it.

Seems to work OK for me if you leave the heading open-toggle.

Jon, thanks for that detail.... I played around with headings in different locations on a page, and I can see that is DOES work as you describe.

thanks as always.

I tried creating a header, copying the link, and then going to another note and adding the link there. (I have tried this many times in the past!) Clicking the link took me to the note, but NOT the original header. Am I doing something wrong? (This would be a fabulous feature.)

Ah that's interesting. I tested on Win and Mac using 10.137.1 and it worked OK.

Was the heading down the note longer than the page as it doesn't focus the cursor on the heading so if the heading is visible above the fold then it would look like just the note.
