A huge thank you to all paid subscribers and many thanks also to those who bought me a coffee. Taming the Trunk is 100% reader supported, no ads or commission links and your support is really appreciated.
The transcription feature is one of Evernote's most popular. Lots of folk use it and its very good, but since it was introduced the size limit on files has been around 30MB which works out at around 30 minutes of audio.
This limit has now been increased.
You can now transcribe up to 1 hour / 100MB of audio and video in one go which will certainly help if you're transcribing meeting. For longer meetings maybe record externally and split.
This means the audio or video must be a maximum of 100MB and no longer than 1 hour.
If the audio or video file is over 100MB the transcribe button won't show and if it’s over an hour, you'll see an error when you try and transcribe.
These are the current file formats that work with the transcription feature:
Audio: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, MPGA, WEBM
Video: MP4, MOV, MPEG
Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP (Max image resolution on mobile is 9216 pixels)

Excluding notes in an Evernote space from search
This isn't new but it's not well documented and could be useful to some folk.
You can use space:spacename
in the search box to perform advanced searches.
I can't see this search being used a lot as when you click on a space and perform a search it defaults to that space but, we can use -space:spacename
to exclude anything in a space.
We can also use -space:*
to exclude notes in any space from the search.
This makes it a bit more useful especially if you use a space as some sort of archive or collection area.
I have a Collection Space where I keep notebooks related to receipts, expenses and other day to day archive information.
If I run a search for Evernote
then I see all the notes in the receipt’s notebook that's in the space which are notes I may not want to see.
I could run the search as Evernote -space:*
and then all the receipts would not be included in the search results.
This may be useful for filtering out the noise.
Another quick tip. You can also exclude notes in a space from the main Notes
list by using the sorting option at the top.
And one more quick one. When you view all Notebooks
you can also exclude any notebooks in a space from the view.
Do use exclude spaces or notebooks from searches? Let me know in the comments.
Taming the Trunk Live Calls
Every month paid subscribers can jump on a live call and we held the first one last week.
We recapped what has happened in the Evernote world over the last month and looked forward to what’s happening soon.
The only issue was that I don't pay Google enough to record meetings which I found out once the meeting had started. So unfortunately, no recording this month.
Next month I'm switching to Zoho Meeting which I pay for and have been using for years. The meeting link will be sent to paid subscribers a few days before the session.
I've also created an iCal file for all the meeting which is available to paid subscribers on the Live Calls page.
As always, let me know if you have any questions.
Have a great weekend
All the best
Jon
The spaces: operator confuses me. If I type space:space_name I only get notes that are in the space and not those notes which are in notebooks in the space.
However if I type space:space_name xxx I get the note which contains xxx even if it is in a notebook within the space.
If I type space:space_name * I get all the notes in the space and in notebooks in the space.
-space:space_name seems to exclude notes in the space and in notebooks in the space. So really the negative of space:space_name *
The located in filter within the filter menu will allow you to list all the notes which are in a space irrespective of whether they are in the space directly or in a notebook within the space. So equivalent to space:space_name *
