The spaces: operator confuses me. If I type space:space_name I only get notes that are in the space and not those notes which are in notebooks in the space.
However if I type space:space_name xxx I get the note which contains xxx even if it is in a notebook within the space.
If I type space:space_name * I get all the notes in the space and in notebooks in the space.
-space:space_name seems to exclude notes in the space and in notebooks in the space. So really the negative of space:space_name *
The located in filter within the filter menu will allow you to list all the notes which are in a space irrespective of whether they are in the space directly or in a notebook within the space. So equivalent to space:space_name *
