I would have thought there would have been legacy pricing for those of us who’ve been with EN for years and have an unknown number of attachments and years of archive. I’ll be exporting my archive of notes - probably to Apple Notes and closing my account before renewal comes up next year. As far as AI is concerned - I don’t need it and certainly wouldn’t pay more to have it. If AI is the reason for the price rise I’ll stick to the intelligence I was gifted with at birth.
Sorry to see you go. The whole grandfathering folks into old plans is not quite as widespread as it used to be and to be honest cloud apps seem to be the only product/service that did this. I wish my electric company did it :)
I hope you find Apple notes works well for you. I think there's an import tool to make it easier.
Yes - Apple Notes will import ENEX files - so I’ll be ok so long as EN creates useable ENEX files in the first place. My last attempt to export my notes resulted in numerous errors - so many, I ended up exporting small numbers of notes so as to trap the errors without having to filter through hundreds of notes to find those which refused to be exported. Tedious.
Export went really well. Notes, tags, attachments all transferred across to Apple Notes without a hitch. All I had to do was rename the import folders in Apple Notes to match the Notebook names in EN. I chose to export in 300Mb ENEX chunks, each containing between 500 and 1500 notes.
Good stuff. Run things side by side for a bit just to make sure everything is working. Also double check on exports for Apple Notes as I hear from a few folk the export process is not than wonderful. Good luck.
I just had that to read that again. Next, I did go to the website to see if you weren't hallucinating. But yes, these plans are actually there. My first reaction is -- nuts!
I am currently on a Plus plan which got increased to 94 euro p. year. From all these new plans I can only get my basic needs covered by the Advanced plan which is 199 euro a year. That is 101% price increase, so a little over doubling the price.
Thus -- after years of poor performance and bad development (I remember the basic syncing conflicts like yesterday), a new company steps in, rebuilds the program and rebuilds some confidence, then hypes a lot of v11 fluff (coming soon!), but first doubles the subscription price. Wow.
After the turnaround with Bending Spoons, I reinvested in Evernote as part of a new workflow and subsequently made an effort to get more value out of it. Part of my decision was that it was hard to move away from EN and migrate to another tool, and I ultimately did not want to make the time and effort at the time. Now, I guess I feel being locked in and then getting squeezed. Perhaps that's just me.
Interesting you're still on a Plus plan. Will be a bigger increase than going from Professional, which I'm on. A lot of tools have import functionality for ENEX files which could help.
Wait until V11 comes out, which is soon and see if its worth it for you.
I checked and I have to correct myself: I am actually on a Personal plan. My note with subscriptions info definitely is outdated ;-)
But.. it won't make any difference as my future price increase still will be huge, because my current plan can only be replaced by the new Advanced plan.
Already looking at the Notion plans. I guess it comes down to the value add of the AI features in either Notion or EN vs the other subscriptions I have for core AI apps like Chatgpt and similar. And... of course.... the pain of moving everything out of Evernote. A proper project for sure.
Yeah. Notion with AI is more money than Evernote Advanced with the AI. Even Obsidian is about the same as EN with their own sync at the level of Advanced storage, plus its a pain to manage, way too complicated.
Could be worth trying.
One of the other Evernote experts tried out Obsidian to give it a go and wasted so much time installing plugins and dealing with different sync plans they gave up, wasn't worth it.
Depending on how much you use ChatGPT check out the assistant when its live as it may provide a lot of the functionality you need. To a certain extent its chatgpt with access to your notes but it can do research and search the web. May save you a Chat GPT subscription.
I know. It surprised me. According to their data 1000+ notes is a big user. I have thousands and clean up on a regular basis as well. I know some folk with 70,000+.
Peace out, Jon. Your EN tips have been extremely helpful. But, I finally finished my EN export process, cancelled my EN subscription, and submitted the request to Bending Spoons to delete my account and all personal information. As such, I'm also working my way through all Evernote-related newsletter and YouTube subs and unsubscribing. Thanks again for the past assists and knowledge-sharing. But, my time with EN has finally come to an end, and I've begun building out my "framework" of OneNote. Let me tell you, reviewing and purging unneccesary notes/notebooks/stacks/spaces followed by the export process for 20+ years of EN was NOT a lot of fun. But alas, I must say that it forced a cleanup/re-organization and I'm looking forward to starting over again. Thanks again!
Good luck with OneNote. Always good to have a clear out. I try and do it twice a year. Next one due next month so should be able to delete a fair bit. Stop by every now and then and say hello.
I use Evernote mainly as a file cabinet for documents, with notations and info at the top of a lot of notes plus tags on everything so while I can certainly afford the new cost, I don't think I will need or use any of the new features. My first stop on testing alternatives will be Notesnook. It will be $70 or $90 per year and looks to be all I need (but I haven't tested it yet. Will do that soon.). My account page says I will renew next May for $141.53, but I assume that will be updated when the date becomes closer.
Yes. The price should update before May and you'll get a 30 day reminder. Plenty of time to experiment with other apps. Have a play with them in real life situations so you get an idea on how they work day to day.
Oof. I've used evernote since 2011 but I just can't afford this increase. I dont need the AI features. I dont want to move but a jump from 80 to 155 is just nuts. I'm amazed there is nothing between the basic and the advanced.
It’s a big jump from personal to advanced. I’m surprised there’s so much distance between the two plans. That said before there was hardly any distance between them which is why most folk were on personal and not professional. You got time to make choices ?
Yes, I have until April. Evernote is so built into my household management that it's a wrench to move but there you go. I haven't needed a lot of the newer features really, I just like it for domestic projects and storing bills and so on, which I can share with my husband. I will be looking at Amplenote, Joplin, Upnote and OneNote I guess. I will need to decide if I want to start a new ecosystem and just retain the archive, or find something that replicates what I have.
Welp! I'm out. Can't afford the price doubling. -- aside from that, EN has gotten to a giant overpacked swiss-army knife assemblage with 'features' that are neither handy nor useful and often get in the way. Any suggestions for a similar?
Sorry to see you go. Anything similar tends to be a similar price. But look at Joplin which doesn't have AI, isn't as polished as EN but could do the job. Obsidian maybe but its way more complicated and very much a DIY type of app with plugins to get functionality and whatnot. Notion is about the same price as EN. Maybe look at Onenote as its pretty much free.
Thanks for the pointer. Looks like Joplin will do just as I need -- a searchable repository for stuff. I sincerely hope they don't go the bloatware route.
I dropped down to Personal from Plus, so a leap to Advanced would be quite a jump. But Evernote is my life, and I've supported them from the beginning, through the ups and downs. I don't renew until August 26, so I'll see if V11 is worth it. I can't see myself moving, though.
Its a big leap from personal to advanced. The AI stuff is very cool and I don't think its going to be long before its out, as in very soon! I've used AI Assistant quite a bit today, almost just like ChatGPT as it has access to everything ChatGPT knows, the web and your notes so the options are pretty much anything!
I just renewed for a year of Evernote Personal back in August for £79. Looks like I'll need Professional in future to cover my needs so that's almost a doubling in price. I'm going to suck it up because I haven't found anything better than Evernote and I don't want to invest any time in checking out other options and then migrating over 5,000 notes across.
I'm also a long-term Todoist subscriber and they emailed me a couple of days ago to tell me an annual subscription would be going up from £28.50 to £60, but if I could live without the new AI features that are coming, I could stay with the current version and keep paying £28.50/year. I'm impressed they gave me that choice. TBH.
£79 sounds like a bargain now! I was surprised about Todoist letting folks hang onto old plans, I don't think you get any of the new features but you can still use the app.
£28.50 a yr is a bargain for TD.... excellent app.
I've been an Evernote user since February, 2008. I'm in the US.
I'm currently paying $15.80 / month for the Personal plan. I have ~23,000 notes, so I'll need the Advanced plan, which is $24.99 / month. That's a 58.2% increase. My income will increase less than 3% next year. Looks like I will be forced to find an alternative to Evernote. I can not afford the price increase.
I'm currently on a Personal plan that was automatically renewed as such this past September, so I've got the best part of a year before I move up to the new subscription rate.
I have over 8,000 notes. probably at least 100 notebooks and who knows how many attachments—so based on that I'll be in the Advanced plan level.
I guess my main questuin is: will I receieve the benefits of the key features if the Advanced plan through the remaining 10 months of my Personal plan sub? Will I get the AI features as they are imolemented?
Its a big jump from Personal. I'm pretty sure everyone is getting access to the V11 AI features. There may be some AI usage limitations for Personal but Professional or Advanced should be unlimited.
I think you are mis-assessing the pricing. With only the "Starter" and "Advanced" single-user pricing and associated feature breaks, they are missing a huge portion of their user base. You looked at Notion's pricing for 'business' at $20/mo. Sure, this is comparable if you want the so called 'AI' features. But other than that, the Plus plan is fine at $10/mo. I have not once used the AI features in Evernote. No, I'm no Luddite. I just don't see the application for most of what Evernote users do with the possible exception of meeting notes. But that I already get from Google Meet so don't care.
The customer service side is a fiasco. I got two emails from them on the same day. One saying I'm getting renewed on December 6th at the old price (no mention of level) and 6 hours later, the announcement of the price doubling and new levels. So.... what are they actually intending to charge me? And the instructions to cancel point to the old billing page (long time paid account holder) which does NOT have a way to cancel. And the new page allows cancellation but (contrary to the notes) says it will terminate immediately. I asked support to clarify almost two weeks ago. Silence.
I'm very disappointed to pay through years of neglect to have the price doubled with no clarity on a promise of an upcoming new release. Pretty clear sign that this isn't the path going forward.
I agree with the perception of many here: with these new price points, Evernote seems to be clearly repositioning itself to focus exclusively on corporate clients (Enterprise).
For the common user, the "final consumer," the cost-benefit ratio has become very difficult to justify. There are free ecosystems today that are extremely robust and offer most of what Evernote charges for.
The Google Ecosystem is the main example: By using free Google tools (Keep, Docs, Drive, and Calendar), you already get:
Notes and Documents: Google Docs is a perfect substitute for long notes, and Keep is great for quick notes.
Advanced Search: Search within Google Drive is already powerful and can "read" the content of PDFs and even images (a feature that used to be a major paid differentiator for Evernote).
Total Integration: Calendar, Tasks, and notes work in a fully integrated manner.
AI and Automation: Google is already infusing its services with AI (Gemini), and the ability to connect documents and files within Drive is excellent.
Even the Apple Ecosystem has evolved: As mentioned, Apple Notes has improved a lot and now features tags, links between notes, and smart folders. While it requires manual setup, it is totally possible to integrate AI using Siri Shortcuts to summarize or process text from notes. It's a free, native solution for Mac or iPhone users.
In summary: For the individual user, who does not need the complex corporate integrations that the Enterprise plan offers, I no longer see any reason to maintain a subscription at such a high price. The free alternatives are not just "good enough"; in many cases, they are already better and more integrated into our daily lives.
