Newsletter Housekeeping: The latest version for Mac & PC is 10.88.4 and you can grab this from the Evernote download page or wait for in-app updates. Latest mobile version should be 10.88.0.
Have you ever used Evernote's version history to go back in time and find out what a note looked like months or years ago?
It’s a really useful little feature that’s available on the desktop and web versions of Evernote and anyone can use it, even if you're on the free plan.
What note history does is keep track of all the changes you've made to a note so if you deleted or edited a paragraph months ago you can go back and see what you did.
To find note history go to the three-dot menu at the top right of a note and select "Note History".
When you click this a pop-up window will appear that gives you all the dates where Evernote has saved a version of the note. I've used my Taming The Trunk Downloads note as an example.
As you can see from the image not only does it give me the save points but also lets me know when the title of the note changed. This one began as "Evernote Home Screen Images", then became "TTT Downloads" and finished up as "Taming the Trunk Downloads".
Now you've got the history open you can do three things.
Click on the version date and you'll see that version of the note. Let’s go back to 27th Jan 2023.
The next option is to export this version of the note. Very useful if you want to start afresh from a point in the past.
When you export the old version, you'll download an ENEX file which you can then save on your hard drive or import into Evernote as a new note.
You can also restore the note back to its previous version.
Note history is one of those little features that not everyone uses or even has a reason to use but I've spoken to authors who write first drafts in Evernote and they go back and read through what a draft looked like months ago, export and rewrite.
I've used this feature myself to go back and look at previous versions of client notes where I may have deleted some information, I thought I no longer wanted.
It’s also useful if you accidentally delete something!
Some new Evernote mobile features
Creating a Table of Contents from the headings in a note arrived on the desktop version of Evernote a few weeks ago and you can now find it on mobile in version 10.88.0.
Tap it and you'll get a nice neat TOC based on the headings of your note.
Another nice little new addition to tasks on mobile is the description box and priority labels.
When you view your tasks in the mobile app you can also see the description and priority.
That's about it for this week. Have you used note history much? Happy to see task improvements on mobile? Let me know in the comments below.
Have a great weekend
All the best
Jon
They're developing new features for Desktop first and getting feedback. Then they are bringing them to Mobile. Now that they have added so many new features to Desktop, they are spending the next few weeks focused on bringing them to Mobile.
Unless I’m mistaken, the TOC feature had been available a while ago. I remember playing with it before. Are you sure this is a new feature?
